About the Job
Marine Policy Officer
Office and/or home based (within a commutable distance to London to attend events and meetings)
The Organisation
We are the Marine Conservation Society, a UK charity fighting for a cleaner, better-protected, healthier ocean: one we can all enjoy.
Right now, our ocean is at a tipping point. We’re polluting our waters and destroying precious habitats, harming the species that live there. This is reducing the ocean's ability to help fight the climate crisis. While a third of UK seas are protected on paper, less than 1% are well managed. We are determined to change this. Using people-powered action and with science on our side, we defend habitats and species, working with communities, businesses, and governments to encourage ocean-based climate action solutions across the UK.
We are now looking for a Marine Policy Officer to join us on a full-time, fixed-term basis for two years, working 35 hours per week.
The Benefits
- Salary of £29,500 - £35,000 per annum
- Annual leave starting at 25 days per year, plus Bank Holidays, and increasing with service (plus closure over Christmas and New Year as extra time off)
- 6% employer contributions to our stakeholder pension scheme
- Full pay for 8 weeks of sick leave, then half-pay for a further 8 weeks (after probation ends)
- Flexible and remote working options to support work-life balance
- Health and wellbeing support, including an employee assistance programme
- One paid day per year for volunteering with another charity of your choice
- Cycle-to-work scheme
This is an excellent opportunity for a policy professional with experience in UK marine policy and engaging with government agencies to join our passionate team.
You’ll have the chance to play an instrumental role in shaping the future of UK marine policy, advocating for sustainable practices and influencing key stakeholders to make a meaningful impact.
So, if you’re passionate about ocean conservation and want to be part of a dedicated team working towards a cleaner, more sustainable ocean, this is the role for you!
The Role
As a Marine Policy Officer, you will support the development and implementation of policies and advocacy plans related to marine planning and offshore renewable energy.
Ensuring environmental priorities are maintained alongside the UK’s transition to low-carbon energy, you will craft strategic policy positions and work with the Parliamentary Affairs team to align these positions with legislative developments.
Additionally, you’ll engage with government and industry representatives, advocating for policies that prioritise nature in marine planning and offshore energy deployment.
Additionally, you will:
- Draft written policy positions and advocacy plans that communicate our strategic goals
- Represent us in stakeholder groups to promote marine conservation
- Engage in public outreach to communicate the importance of sustainable marine practices
About You
To be considered as a Marine Policy Officer, you will need:
- Experience working with government agencies in marine policy, ideally within NGOs, governments or statutory bodies
- Experience in policy analysis
- Experience writing concise and compelling policy briefings or documents
- Knowledge of UK marine policy and legislation
- Confidence engaging with government and external stakeholders
- Excellent research and analytical skills
Please note, this role will involve occasional travel to external meetings and events in other major locations in the UK.
The closing date for this role is midnight on Sunday 17th of November 2024.
Interviews will be held on the week commencing 25th of November 2024.
